Maarten: Receptionist and the face of Renewi in Lommel
A passion for people and service
Maarten is the face of Renewi's Financial Shared Services Centre in Lommel. For 5.5 years, he has welcomed visitors and supported his colleagues with enthusiasm and dedication. "For me, this really is an ideal job. I have a passion for human contact and enjoy helping others."
From temporary job to career at Renewi
His career started as a temporary desk clerk at the municipality. There, he discovered how much energy he got from connecting with people. When that assignment ended, he knew: this is the direction I want to build on. Soon after, he was able to start work at Renewi, a place where he has felt completely at home ever since. More than a receptionist: involved in communications and events
Martin is much more than a receptionist. Besides receiving visitors, answering phones and performing administrative tasks, he is also an active member of the party committee and the communications team.For instance, he organises activities such as a Kubb tournament to strengthen the collegial atmosphere, and provides creative input for internal and external communication.
No two days are the same: dynamics at the reception desk
"My days are very busy, but that's just what makes it fun. Every day is different and there is always something new to solve," Maarten says.He starts his morning by getting the reception desk ready, greeting colleagues and taking note of lunch orders. This is followed by a stream of visitors, questions and tasks. "You often feel the effect of what you do immediately. That provides satisfaction."
A proud ambassador of Renewi's sustainable mission
His colleagues describe him as a true Renewi ambassador. Maarten radiates pride in both the work he does and the company's mission: "Many people don't realise that Renewi is so much more than just a waste company. We give waste a second life, and are really committed to recycling and sustainability."He also translates that sustainable mission to his own workplace. For example, he pays attention to the use of environmentally-friendly cleaning products and helped improve the waste sorting system in the office.
Strong team spirit, even as a solo player
Although Maarten runs the reception independently, he feels a strong connection with the Billing team sitting next to him. "We support each other where necessary, and I like to involve them in initiatives and ideas."His commitment and dedication did not go unnoticed. Recently, he was playfully named "Director of First Impressions" by the management team, a recognition he is visibly proud of.
