Myrthe Graff – van Trainee naar Manager Purchase to Buy
A kick-start to your career
Myrthe started as a Management Trainee at Renewi and is now working as Manager Purchase to Pay at the Shared Service Centre in Lommel, Belgium. Prior to the Traineeship, she completed the BSc Economics & Business Economics at Radboud University Nijmegen, after which she obtained her master’s degree at the University of Amsterdam in International Economics & Globalisation.
‘’I had chosen the Renewi traineeship because I found it difficult to immediately make the right choice for my career after a generic study. The Trainee programme gave me a flying start in discovering my talents within an organisation where I get plenty of opportunities and get to look around in many places. An organisation where I can grow a lot and develop myself in a short time. ‘’
Experiences during the Traineeship
During her Traineeship, Myrthe got the chance to lead a team of 10 people during an assignment, quite a challenge. But it taught her a lot about managing a team and dealing with different dynamics. ‘Here I learnt that my heart really lies in working with people and managing teams. I find organising and dealing with the different aspects of a team very interesting. During the Traineeship, I found out that this is also where my talent lies.’
Growth opportunities after the Traineeship
After completing her traineeship, Myrthe was given the opportunity to set up a new department and eventually grow into the role of Manager Purchase to Pay. ‘After my first assignment at the Shared Service Centre, I kept in touch with the Director SSC. After my Traineeship, a new team arrived at that location which I had the opportunity to set up. This allowed me to continue to grow.’
Myrthe says it is important to make yourself visible and actively pursue opportunities. This proactive attitude has helped her take several steps in her career. ‘It is important to indicate yourself what you want and clearly state your ambition. That way, you can get a lot of opportunities.’
Impact on the organisation
Myrthe and her fellow trainee Sem also organised a big event to increase employee pride in Renewi. They took up this project entirely on their own. ‘We picked everything ourselves, put together a team and presented our idea ourselves to get budget. That was a really fun challenge.’ The festival they organised became a great success!
Advice for future Trainees
If you need tips as a future Trainee, Myrthe has plenty of them. ‘I have so many tips. But above all, visit many locations and be open to learning new things both in the business and from all colleagues. Know what people do and show interest, then you will learn the most.’
