How Kristof supports Renewi’s digital transformation

Kristof Mettepenningen is Program Manager ICT at Renewi and one of the key figures behind Digital Core a critical part of the company’s transformation. As Renewi prepares for the future, Kristof and his team play a leading role in designing and implementing a modern ERP landscape that enables business growth and operational excellence.

What is Digital Core?

Digital Core is a cornerstone of Renewi’s broader Future Fit program, which focuses on future-proofing the organisation. At its heart lies the implementation of a new ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system: Microsoft Dynamics 365. This new system will replace the aging ERP platforms and will serve as a central engine to support Renewi’s “to-be” business processes in the most automated and efficient way possible.

Delivering business value through technology

The key objective of the Digital Core team is to deliver tangible value to the business. Using a Flexible Delivery Model, the Digital & Data department focuses on building the capabilities that will help Renewi achieve its strategic ambitions making it easier to streamline processes, gain better insight, and operate more efficiently.

Built on Microsoft Dynamics 365 best practices

The new ERP system is being built on Microsoft Dynamics 365 staying as close to the standard solution as possible. Deviating from best practices may be necessary at times, but the goal is always to reduce long-term complexity and ensure maintainability and scalability.

From projects to EPICs: a value-driven approach

At Renewi, the traditional idea of “projects” has been replaced by a more agile, value-driven approach. Kristof’s team works with EPICs large blocks of work that typically take up to a year to deliver. These EPICs are broken down into Features, which are developed and delivered every Program Increment (PI), roughly every three months. This incremental delivery model ensures continuous progress and faster feedback loops.

Cross-functional collaboration is key

Cross-functional collaboration is central to the Digital Core approach. Within the Flexible Delivery Model, work happens on three levels: Business Value Stream (BVS), Development Value Stream (DVS), and the Scrum team level. Especially at the BVS level, close alignment with business stakeholders is essential. This structured collaboration ensures the business gets what it really needs and when it needs it.

The people behind Digital Core

The Scrum teams behind Digital Core include a variety of specialised roles. Scrum Masters facilitate and coach the teams, while Product Owners define priorities and guide development. Business Analysts ensure that business requirements are clearly understood and translated into actionable tasks. At the core are the DevOps and Lead DevOps engineers, who configure systems and write the code that powers the new ERP platform.

Laying the foundation for a future-proof Renewi

With Digital Core, Kristof and his team are not just replacing software, they’re laying the digital foundation for Renewi’s future.
